Ignite Business Insider Interview with Joseph Haecker, Editor-in-Chief of Design Porn
Ignite Business Insider (IBI): Joseph, let's dive right in! What inspired you to launch Design Porn, and what sets it apart in the design and architecture industry?
Joseph Haecker (JH): Well, I've always believed in pushing boundaries and sparking uncomfortable conversations. Design Porn was born out of a desire to challenge the norms, bringing raw and honest stories from the design community that you won't find in mainstream publications. We're a provocateur, shaking things up in an industry that needs a wake-up call.
IBI: The name "Design Porn" definitely catches attention. Can you shed light on the choice of such a bold name and the playful logo?
JH: Absolutely! The name is a deliberate play on the website Porn Hub. The provocative logo is designed to make people uncomfortable, yet curious. It's a statement that challenges perceptions. However, once you step inside, you'll find that Design Porn is more of a lifestyle magazine akin to Playboy, exploring the artistic facets of design, architecture, and lifestyle.
IBI: The topics covered in Design Porn seem diverse. Could you elaborate on the range of subjects you delve into and why these topics matter?
JH: Design Porn delves into a spectrum of subjects – from pop culture and lifestyle to art, music, and industry exposes. We believe that to truly innovate, you need to explore the edges, challenge norms, and understand the diverse influences on design. These topics matter because they shape the narrative of our industry and inspire fresh perspectives.
IBI: You bring a unique background to Design Porn. How has your experience as a former lighting designer and founder of Dezignwall influenced your vision for this provocative platform?
JH: My journey in the design world, coupled with founding Dezignwall and hosting Design Talk LIVE, opened my eyes to the industry's untapped potential. Design Porn is an extension of my passion for fostering creativity and breaking down barriers. I believe my diverse experiences uniquely position me to stir the pot and propel the design and architecture community into new realms.
IBI: Could you share an interesting fact about Design Porn that people might not know?
JH: Certainly! Our contributors are invited to push their own boundaries of comfort and vulnerability, not just in their stories but also in the visuals they share. It adds an extra layer of authenticity to the content, making each article a journey into the personal and professional lives of designers and architects.
IBI: Why does Design Porn matter to the design and architecture community, in your opinion?
JH: Design Porn matters because it offers a platform for genuine, unfiltered stories. It's a space where creatives can feel seen, understood, and inspired. By embracing discomfort and questioning the status quo, Design Porn propels the industry forward, encouraging innovation and individual expression.
IBI: For those eager to access Design Porn, how can they do so? And if someone wants to get featured in the digital magazine, what's the process?
JH: Accessing Design Porn is easy – just head to www.josephhaecker.com/designporn. As for getting featured in the digital magazine, we welcome contributions from the design community.
