So, I'm excited to dive into your latest project. Can you start out by sharing a little bit about how this project came to be?
Garrett Interiors was approached via Instagram for a model unit staging project at an apartment complex in East Dallas. The clients aimed to mirror the complex's style and atmosphere, emphasizing vibrant colors, diverse textures, and eclectic patterns. Inspired by the tropics and the lively fusion of island aesthetics, our design concept embraced a playful yet sophisticated ambiance, blending various textures, patterns, and styles to create a dynamic and inviting space reflective of both the complex and the company's ethos.
So, each project has its, let's call it its "challenge". What aspect of this design was a challenge from the onset?
In our latest project, we encountered a design challenge when the sofa we ordered arrived in a blue hue instead of the intended dove grey color, just minutes before completion. Despite the unexpected twist, we swiftly improvised by sourcing stunning tweed multicolor pillows from Crate & Barrel. These pillows seamlessly integrated the sofa with the rest of the decor, effortlessly pulling in colors from other elements in the space and ensuring a harmonious design scheme. Our quick thinking and resourcefulness resulted in a beautifully cohesive arrangement, salvaging the situation with style.

Now that we know the challenge. What was your vision for the project?
My vision for the project was to implement as much color and pattern as possible without breaking the bank. I envisioned incorporating lots of fun colors in the art and upholstery, along with plenty of plants to replicate the tropics. To achieve this, I sourced items from antique stores, thrift shops, furniture showrooms, and a small selection of retail stores. By blending these elements together, I aimed to create a cohesive and inexpensive look that captured the vibrant and dynamic atmosphere I envisioned.
An aspect most people overlook is the team of specialist it takes to make this vision a reality. Can you share a little bit about your team and vendors?
For this project, my team consisted solely of myself, taking on the roles of sourcing, tracking, and scheduling. I was responsible for every aspect of the project, from initial consultations with the client to overseeing installation and monitoring deliveries. Communication was key as I relayed any changes or updates to the client promptly.

The process began with a thorough consultation with the client to understand their needs and preferences. After receiving approval and a paid deposit, we delved into crafting plans and design concepts. Once these were finalized and approved, we proceeded to allocate 25% of the budget to begin ordering the necessary items.

Throughout the ordering process, I diligently tracked deliveries to ensure everything arrived on time and as expected. Upon receiving all items, we set a final installation date. During installation, I was present to supervise and ensure everything was executed according to plan.

Following installation, we conducted a three-week follow-up to address any additional needs or adjustments, ensuring complete satisfaction with the project outcome. This streamlined approach allowed for efficient project management and a seamless experience for the client.
Now, we all have some key features of a project that we are especially proud of. What were some aspects of this project that you were excited about?
During my sourcing for this project, the most thrilling aspect was discovering the perfect pieces to bring my vision to life. One highlight was stumbling upon a tribal jungle wallpaper that immediately sparked my excitement. I knew it would make a striking statement on the bar wall, infusing the space with a sense of adventure and vibrancy.

Another exhilarating find was a stunning peacock painting that effortlessly pulled out the teals and blues from the wallpaper. Its bold and majestic presence added an extra layer of depth and character to the design, tying the room together beautifully. These unique elements not only captured the essence of the tropics but also elevated the overall aesthetic of the space, making them essential components of the project.
Having the right team in place when things go wrong is vital. Can you share a specific issue that came up during the project? And how did you and your team solve it?
This instance highlights the invaluable expertise of a seasoned professional in interior design. When faced with the unexpected challenge of a sofa arriving in the wrong color just moments before completion, our ability to think on our feet and swiftly adapt proved crucial. Drawing upon our knowledge and experience, we were able to source complementary tweed multicolor pillows from Crate & Barrel, seamlessly integrating them into the design scheme. By leveraging our expertise, we transformed what could have been a design setback into an opportunity to enhance the space further, showcasing the value of having an expert guide throughout the project.

Design projects can easily become a money pit, without the right team. What design hurdle did you guys encounter? And how'd you solve it?
Design projects indeed have the potential to spiral into a financial abyss without the guidance of a skilled team. In our recent endeavor, we faced a significant design hurdle when the sofa we ordered arrived in an unexpected blue hue instead of the planned dove grey color, just minutes before completion. This unforeseen challenge could have derailed the project and incurred additional expenses. However, thanks to our expertise and resourcefulness, we swiftly pivoted and sourced stunning tweed multicolor pillows from Crate & Barrel. These pillows not only seamlessly integrated with the existing decor but also salvaged the situation elegantly, ensuring a harmonious design scheme without breaking the bank. Our ability to navigate this obstacle showcases the importance of having a competent team to steer the project clear of potential financial pitfalls.
